Cold Emailing

advice-reddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/csMajors/s/eYEPYU2lsZ The Reasoning

I think cold emailing can work wonders if done right, especially at smaller pre/post-IPO companies that seem to have a heavy bias towards kids at target schools (think Figma, Asana, Affirm, etc). No disrespect - these are obviously great companies - but I doubt many kids even know what Figma is, let alone dream of working there. I’m sure recruiters at these companies don’t get cold contacted very often, so that will make you stand out. A few things to note:

  • A cold email will be much more effective than a LinkedIn message because
    • it’s harder to ignore on the recruiter’s end
    • recruiters check their email constantly
    • it’s more personal and less publicly available
  • I suggest applying online first so they can easily look at your profile. I made the mistake of not doing this for Figma only to get a response of, “Please apply online :)”- got ghosted after that lmfao

How to Get Their Email

  • I literally searched ” university recruiter” on LinkedIn and guessed their email based on the name and the email address format their company might use (a bit tryhard I know lmao)
  • Also a neat site called RocketReach where you can be certain the address exists (5 or so free lookups)

The Content

  • Be sure to send the email at a time that will maximize the chances of them seeing it
    • I made sure to do a scheduled send at 9:30am PST (or EST) on a weekday. Sending something at 6:00pm on a Saturday is just asking for it to get buried/ignored
  • Be sure to include your name, your school (especially if it’s fancy), a brief description of technologies you know, and a polished resume as an attachment
  • Mention that you applied online and emphasize your excitement about the position
  • DON’T write an essay
  • Personalize it (ex. I opened it with something like “…hope you’re doing well in these difficult times” because of COVID)

The Results

  • This worked surprisingly well
    • I got a response rate of about 33%, and got interviews/coding challenges with Snap, Salesforce, Affirm, and Capital One after not hearing back from any of them for >3 weeks
